Who Is The Better [BLANK]? An Intro To C.E.R.
This lab activity introduces students to CERs, where they develop a scientific question, research and collect evidence, and write claims and reasoning.
Directions: Watch Culturally Relevant Science’s Claim, Evidence, Reasoning C.E.R. video and use C.E.R. to argue which of two celebrities (e.g. artists, actresses/actors, athletes, content creators) are better.
1. CHOOSE: Pick two people to compare (e.g., two artists, actors, athletes, content creators).
2. QUESTION: Create a question about who is better.
- Example: Who is the better rapper, Lil Baby or NBA YoungBoy?
3. CLAIM: Make a claim answering your question. You can collect evidence before writing your claim.
- Example: Lil Baby is the better rapper.
4. EVIDENCE: Research facts about both people.
- Look for things like net worth, album sales, award nominations, ticket sales, streams, etc.
5. REASONING: Explain how your evidence supports your claim.
- Restate your claim.
- Combine your evidence into 2-3 sentences to support your claim.
- Provide a concluding sentence (e.g., "In summary" or "In conclusion").
